Banners

Web banners are a form of advertising used on the internet. It is done by implanting small graphical banners onto interesting or highly viewed websites. They idea is that more people visit the advertisers web site by clicking on the banner. Banners are usually very tall and thin or short and wide to easily fit at the top, bottom or side of an existing page. They are referred to as banners because they resemble banners in the real world.

Web banners are intended to inform a potential client base of services or products that are provided by the advertiser and then redirect them to the advertiser’s sight. Whether or not these banners actually generate more income for the advertiser I don’t know, but I do know that the sites where these banners are placed get paid to have the banners on them. It is a very lucrative business advertising on the internet and all you really need to do it is a website that receives a lot of hits.

Many people on the internet regard these banners as annoying and they make web pages load slowly and basically hog bandwidth that could be used for other purposes. A lot of banners have animations and sounds as well that can be especially irritating when you are just surfing the web.
