It might surprise you that the woman who most desires breast implants probably is not the ideal candidate. A good candidate for breast augmentation is a healthy adult who is making the decision to have cosmetic surgery for non-emotional reasons. It is important that she have a very realistic view of the surgery and how it will benefit her, and an overall positive self image.
This means that women who seek breast implants out of a general dissatisfaction with her body type is no considered eligible for augmentation. This also means that a woman who is having the surgery in order to satisfy others, whether it be because of her personal relationships or career field, is not considered a good candidate.
It is recommended that a young woman wait to consider breast surgery until she is over the age of 21, because a woman’s breast tissue continues to develop and change into the early to mid twenties. It is also not recommended for women who are planning to become pregnant, since pregnancy increases the risk of revision surgery.
Women who have children after having had breast implants often report more breast tenderness and sensitivity, greater engorgement complications, and occasionally, an inability to breast feed. Women who are good candidates for surgery should be aware that FDA research has found most women will require revision surgery of some type once every decade for the rest of her life, so women who are considering implants should carefully consider the long term financial commitment they are making. If you still believe you are a good candidate for this surgery, contact your local surgeon for more details.
